If you want a narrower scarf, I would recommend about 24 chains. That will give you 10 puff stitches for every other chain. You will want to think about what type of edge do you want. If you want to end the edge with a double crochet at each edge, you will need to add 2 additional chains.
I have 3 tutorials on the ripple afghan.
